⏰ Tick-Tock, It’s Art O’Clock: The Clock Drawing Activity at MTMS
Time is one of the most important concepts a child can learn, but it can also be one of the most challenging. At Mother Teresa Memorial School, we believe in making “abstract” ideas “concrete.” Recently, our students participated in a vibrant Clock Drawing Activity, turning a math lesson into a creative masterpiece.
By building their own clocks from scratch, students moved beyond just looking at a wall clock; they became active participants in understanding how time is structured.
🎨 Learning Through Design
The activity was structured to help students visualize the mechanics of a clock face. Here is how our young learners approached the task:
The Perfect Circle: Students practiced their drawing skills by creating the foundation of the clock.
Number Placement: This was a great exercise in spatial awareness and sequencing, as students carefully placed numbers 1 through 12 at equal intervals.
The Hands of Time: Drawing the hour and minute hands helped students differentiate between the two and understand their specific roles.
A Splash of Color: To make the lesson stick, students filled their designs with bright colors, making each clock as unique as the student who created it.
🧠 Why This Activity Works
Hands-on activities like clock-making offer several educational advantages:
Memory Retention: Physically drawing and coloring a clock helps the brain remember the layout better than just looking at a picture.
Motor Skill Development: Precise drawing and coloring strengthen the small muscles in the hands.
Reducing “Math Anxiety”: By blending math with art, students feel more relaxed and confident when tackling numerical concepts.
📸 Moments from the Classroom
Our classrooms were buzzing with concentration and excitement. It was wonderful to see students helping each other ensure the “12” and “6” were perfectly aligned! These moments of peer-to-peer learning are what make the MTMS environment so special.
