๐Ÿ“– Words Within Words: Creative English Learning in Std. 2

At Mother Teresa Memorial School, we believe that language learning should be an adventure of discovery. Recently, our Std. 2 students took part in a series of interactive English activities designed to deepen their understanding of word structures and vocabulary in a fun, hands-on way.

These activities go beyond rote memorization, encouraging students to visualize and manipulate language to see how it works.

๐Ÿ” Activity 1: The “Hidden Word” Challenge

In this clever exercise, students explored the concept of “words within words.” Each student held a paper with a primary word and, through the simple act of folding the paper to hide the first letter, revealed entirely new words hidden inside.

This activity helps students improve their spelling and recognize patterns in English phonics. Some of the impressive examples included:

  • PRICE revealing RICE and then ICE

  • PLATE transforming into LATE

  • MOTHER becoming OTHER

  • STABLE uncovering TABLE and ABLE

  • CHAIR hiding HAIR and AIR

  • CHEAT leading to HEAT and EAT

๐Ÿ”„ Activity 2: Mastering Antonyms with Rhythm

Following the word-play challenge, the students moved into a rhythmic activity focused on Opposite Words. By repeating the words in a “triple-beat” style (e.g., “Tall-Tall-Tall”), the students used auditory and kinesthetic learning to cement these concepts in their memories.

The pairs practiced included:

  • Tall vs. Short

  • Yes vs. No

  • Big vs. Small

  • Happy vs. Sad

  • Up vs. Down

  • Open vs. Close

โœจ Why Interactive Learning Matters

These activities are a vital part of our curriculum at MTMS. By making lessons interactive, we:

  • Increase Engagement: Students are more likely to remember what they learn when they are physically involved.

  • Build Confidence: Speaking and presenting in front of the class helps develop early public speaking skills.

  • Simplify Complex Concepts: Breaking down words makes the English language feel more approachable and logical for young learners.
